Media Arts currently offers three minors: web design, photography, and documentary studies.

Web Design

Internet use is now ubiquitous with online commerce, entertainment, and social networking media increasingly affecting every business and profession. Offered by the Media Arts Department, the 15-credit, university-wide minor in Web Design will provide students from all disciplines with a sequence of courses that builds a deeper understanding of the web sites by focusing on the design process. Coursework includes information architecture, emphasis on visual aesthetics and hierarchy, prototyping, user testing, and development, thereby enabling students to understand, design, create and manage web sites.

The 15-credit photography minor allows non-majors and Media Arts students who are pursuing other concentrations to acquire additional skills in digital and traditional black and white photography. The course of study begins with a fine arts foundation in photography and transitions to the commercial avenues of photography whether it be photojournalism, documentary, or portrait photography. Students make, edit, and print photographs using either the department's fully equipped B&W darkroom, or one of its large format Epson printers. Digital photographs can be printed up to 44" in width. In addition, the photography program at RMU consistently offers opportunities to take classes abroad.

Documentary Studies

Documenting events takes many forms. The 18-credit documentary studies minor is highly flexible and allows students to choose from a variety of courses in filmmaking, journalism and/or photography.
